brown baggin' it - homemade microwave popcorn

So what do brown paper bags have to do with corn?  HOMEMADE MICROWAVE POPCORN of course!!  And why would we bother making homemade popcorn?  Once again, you can control the ingredients....all natural popcorn with no artificial chemicals or ingredients.  It's better for you, better tasting and way cheaper.  And best of all - super simple!  This may be old news for some, but I just read about it a few months ago from Snack Girl.  I thought it was an awesome idea, especially since I had just read something about the dangers of microwave popcorn.  You can read one of the articles here.

All you need is brown paper "lunch" bags, popping corn, and tape to seal your bag!  That's it!  Add 1/4 cup of corn to your bag, fold the top of the bag over and seal with tape.  Place in microwave, and pop - I have a "popcorn" setting that I use.  I think it's about 3.5 minutes.

and then you have a healthy, low cal snack!

and my kids favorite part....they get to add their own "seasonings".  Last night they used spray butter and cinnamon/sugar.  I always go for the SALT!  I keep saying I'm going to try something different, but haven't yet.  So anyway, hope someone finds this as interesting as I did!  I'm always looking for healthier alternatives to my kids favorite foods!  Happy Friday!

**Update - if you want to know more about the nutritional content of popcorn check out The Candid RD.  Her post today compares microwave and stove top popcorn.

  4. I have a hot air popper. It's lowfat, which is how I justify the ridiculous amount of melted butter I pour over it.

  5. A friend of mine did that but she would spray Pam in the bag first. I like the idea of adding the spray butter and seasoning after when it's hot, it probably sticks better.

  6. My jaw dropped this is brilliant - I love the ease of microwave popcorn but not all the stuff in it! Fabulous!
