It looks pretty plain, but it is actually white chocolate and cake batter coated popcorn! It was addictive! It was also a pain in the butt to make, but that might have been our fault. Maybe ;-)
We added the popcorn to treat bags, with some Whoppers candy and Laffy Taffy thrown in, and tied them with ribbon that matched her party theme.
Birthday Cake Batter Popcorn from Tasty Kitchen
¼ cups Shortening
1-½ cup Cake Mix (yellow or white)
6 cups Popcorn (popped)
¼ cups Sprinkles
Place almond bark or white chocolate in a microwave safe bowl. Melt in the microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring between each interval until fully melted.
Add shortening to melted almond bark/chocolate and stir until it is melted.
Add the cake mix to the almond bark/chocolate. This is where it got
Pour the coating onto the popcorn and coat evenly. Since the mixture was pretty thick, stirring with a spoon was not working well for us, so I used my hands and worked it all together. Sticky, messy business! And for anyone reading who may have actually eaten this popcorn, yes, I washed my hands first ;-)
Spread the popcorn out onto cookie sheets, add sprinkles, and allow to cool/harden.
My children and I were constantly picking some up when we passed it on the counter! I ended up making a batch of plain air-popped popcorn, added salt, and mixed the two together, for an even better sweet and salty combo, and I added chocolate candy (the Whoppers). We had to get this stuff bagged up pretty quick, or it wouldn't have made it until after the party!
This is the air popper I have (affiliate ad), we have used it A LOT! However, no air popper? No problem! You can still have healthy popcorn, with the convenience of the microwave. (and it's cheap too!)
